# How to Evaluate Foam Like an Engineer

Evaluating foam properly requires more than checking **density and IFD (Indentation Force Deflection)**. Those measurements provide useful baseline information, but they do not tell the full story of how custom & standard foams will perform in a real application.

Engineers evaluate foam as a **complete system**, looking at factors such as **hysteresis, airflow, fatigue resistance, and load curve behavior**. Together, these properties provide a clearer picture of how foam responds to pressure, repeated use, and changing conditions.

**Load curves** show how foam behaves at different compression levels. **Fatigue testing** reveals how well it maintains its properties over time. **Airflow** can affect breathability, temperature management, and comfort, while **hysteresis** helps measure energy absorption and recovery.

Process consistency also matters. Even the best foam formulation can underperform if its properties cannot be reproduced reliably from one production run to the next.

A structured **foam evaluation and testing process** reduces risk and improves material selection. It moves decision-making beyond specification matching and toward real-world performance engineering.
